Bouncy and Dopey

12 weeks, 3 days

So much for being a regular blogger. It takes a bit more dedication than I thought. I do have a excuse though as I have been feeling a little crappy and moody and sicky and bloated and FAT.
Quite a lot has happened since my last post. Probably the biggest news was my 8 week scan. This is where we discovered that the one peanut is actually two!
I went to doc Karen for my 8 week scan. I was quite nervous at this point, because even though the first pregnancy test was positive, it had been 6 weeks since that result. With no symptoms yet and not feeling much different, there was a tiny worry that there wouldn't be a baby. So the scene was set...
I was lying in the darkened room with hubby behind me. Doc had the probe thing ready as we still had to do an internal exam. Probe is inserted while I hold my breath. A blurred image. Sudden focus as two distinct dark bubbles comes into view. Doc gets such a fright at this sight that she , non too gently, yanks out the probe and looks at Dave. "I saw that! It's two!". Karen confirms this. It is indeed twins. Back in with the probe for a closer look. A quick scrounge around to make sure there are no other surprises waiting. And 5 minutes later we have a photo of two little peanuts while Dave has already sms'd his entire contact list with the news.

The rest of the day is spent in a bit of a daze with my single overriding thought being : we need a double pram and two cots now!

So that was just over 4 weeks ago. Since then I have had some interesting bouts of sickyness. Incredible hunger. Boobs that are growing as if possessed with a life of their own. And a endless parade of people patting my tummy.

And now to the title of my blog today.

Monday we had the 12 weeks scan. This was a bit more serious as we now had to test for Down's syndrome. The babies are now quite clear. The top one (baby "A") is very active and turned into profile nicely for the measurement of the neck skin. The nickname is now "Bouncy" for this one, as he/she/it moves around and even jumps every now and then. Almost like a sneezy convulsion. "B" of "Sleepy" is another matter. He/she/it was quite content sleeping on his side facing us, and very uncooperative when requested to turn into profile for the neck measurement. After 10 minutes of prodding and jiggling, Sleepy finally rolled over for a brief second, and resumed his original position. I am using "he" as only a boy could be this lazy. Or maybe its the academic one with Bouncy being a budding sports star.

So thats the latest. Except for the fat that I have now increased a cup size for my bra, none of my work slacks fit anymore and buying a swimming costume is a helluva mission. I have bought my first two maternity slacks and a maternity bra. My tummy is definitely starting to swell a bit, but as least the sickyness is over.

They say the next three months are the best time, because after that moving around like the titanic puts a bit of a dampener and things.

Well lets see!

5 weeks in

So please excuse the unimaginative title. I am not feeling especially creative right now. I guess first of all, the obligatory gestational update. The little spud is now 5 weeks old, and according the the deluge of daily literature, development is proceeding quite rapidly. The quote from www.thecradle.com: "By now, the division between the cerebral hemispheres (two halves of your baby’s brain) is well marked. The upper and lower jaws are present. Your baby weighs about .00004 ounce (.001 g). That’s about as heavy as an eyelash from your lower lid."

As far as changes I am experiencing, the most noticeable must be the sore mammaries (I am using this term to spare potential male family members that might be reading, any embarrasment) . Sleeping on my stomach is quite uncomfortable, and there is also a marked increase in size.
The other thing is, yes you guessed it: morning sickness! Yay. Actually I don't have much to complain about yet. Its more like a constant low level queasiness (thank god for spell checker).

Another interesting phenomenon is the tummy pointing. We were at a family gathering with the in-laws last night, and upon our departure, various aunties points at the tummy with words of wisdom. It was a strange experience to have people addressing my body parts.

I guess that's it for now. The next big occurance is the first scan on Monday. Its with a bit of trepidation that I face this. Firstly just to confirm that there is indeed a little spud growing in there. At this stage there is nothing showing and sometimes I wonder if the symptoms are imagined. Secondly, we will find out
how many spuds there are. Because of the process we went through, there were multiple eggs which could mean multiple babies! But let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

Well that's it for now. I am sitting in a dodgy little hotel room in Piet Retief and inspiration is in short supply.

Nighty night!

Blogging virgin

So here we go. I am starting this blog as a journal of my pregnancy. Self indulgent, I know, but after considering many options, blogging seemed the logical way of keeping record of the trials and tribulation to come.

Maybe firstly, some clarification on the chosen title :"The Pregnant Fairy". This might seem an odd title, mainly because fairies are seldom associated with inflated tummies and burgeoning bosoms. Picturing inflated fairies flitting between the blossoms and enticing unwary travelers does however bring a smile to the face.
I actually have my husband to thank for the title as he has often referred to our pregnant friends and family members as exactly that - pregnant fairies. I do hope in his eyes I remain a fairy and don't gradually morph into a image more unbecoming, like blossoming behemoth or hormone ridden harpy.

Secondly, a brief recap of the journey so far. Without going into elaborate details, it has been a two year journey including various hormone, injections, operations, doctors and disappointments. At long last, we had a positive result three days ago. My best friend and doctor, Karen, finally achieved the miracle. Currently the little one (at this stage this stage the singular reference might still change, as numerous eggies vied for attention) is a mere 2 weeks and 3 days old. One benefit of fertility treatment is that the conception date is a certainty.

Thus far no symptoms to report. Probably the most notable change in my life has been trying to adhere to the endless list of "what NOT to do". I already miss my glass of Savignon Blanc, my biltong snacks and sushi.

I will strive to update this blog as frequently as is sensible, without boring potential readers to tears, going into excessively boring details or acting like I am the first pregnant woman on earth.

Cheers for now

And to end with, here is a picture of pokkel (I am still deciding on an appropriate name for the little thing)
